These source files are processed by scripts/process-fonts.py during the build process to generate:
Platform-specific variants:
- Hinted (Windows/Linux) - Full hinting tables retained
- Unhinted (macOS/iOS/Android) - Hinting stripped, desubroutinized
Format variants:
- WOFF2 (modern browsers)
- WOFF (Safari 17 fallback)
Subsets (optional):
- Critical subset (detected glyphs only)
- Latin subset (U+0020-007F, U+00A0-00FF, U+2000-206F)
Licenses
Roboto: Apache License 2.0 (see Roboto-LICENSE.txt) Montserrat: SIL Open Font License 1.1 (see Montserrat-LICENSE.txt)
Both licenses allow:
- ✅ Free commercial use
- ✅ Modification and redistribution
- ✅ Self-hosting
- ✅ Subset generation
- ✅ Format conversion
Migration Notes
Replacing: Adobe Fonts (Typekit) - Roboto & Montserrat Reason: Self-hosting, platform-specific optimization, legal compliance
Using the exact same fonts as currently deployed (Roboto + Montserrat) but from open-source Google Fonts instead of Adobe Typekit. This ensures:
- Zero visual change - Same fonts users already see
- Legal compliance - Proper licensing for self-hosting
- Performance optimization - Platform-specific variants with subsetting
- Safari compatibility - OTS sanitization and WOFF fallback support
